The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game review a surprisingly fun action game that finally tweaks the Lego formula Ryan Brown. The last LEGO games I properly played were the Harry Potter games, and the last two before that were the Star Wars games. As such, Ive missed a lot of entries in TT Games monumentally successful LEGO series, but in a way, thats probably the best way to experience them. Theyre all great action adventure collectathon games with a ton of passion and effort put into them, but the formula hasnt progressed at a very rapid rate. How odd it is that the entry that could most easily have been a cheap cash in is the one to flip the formula in the most exciting way since the series began. The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game injects the series with new life, though its not without its problems. Ninjago is not a property I find particularly interesting, and reviews of its recent animated movie dont lead me to believe that Im wrong. Properties like Harry Potter and Star Wars provide a lot more material for an expansive adventure game than Ninjago, and its likely TT Games thought the same. That explains the dramatic shake up of the formula these LEGO games have stuck to for a decade, as The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game yes, that title is ridiculous is far more action orientated than previous entries. Following the plot of the movie, you play as various ninja characters as you complete story missions and explore the segmented open world of Ninjago. Missions take place in a fairly linear setting, but after its completed youre left in the open area of the game, able to backtrack through the locations of the previous levels. Its an odd way of splitting up an open world, making collecting everything in the game ancient scrolls, gold brick, minifigs, etc. LEGO games. Although you can replay story missions, theres no longer a need for a free play feature, which was necessary in prior LEGO games to reach new areas with previously inaccessible characters. The open world provides you with a mini map and the ability to swap between any character in your roster. This is my favourite choice, obviously. Moves like the Rushing Boar a rush attack, Floating Butterfly a flying drop kick that lets you hit enemies consecutively think Sonics jump dash and the Swooping Hawk ground pound form the majority of your abilities. You can also dodge and perform finishing moves on stunned enemies, racking up a sweet combo in doing so, which rewards you with a temporary stud multiplier. Surprisingly, enemies can block your attacks if you use the same move too often, forcing you to mix up your attack pattern. Ive seen even more serious action games neglect the issue. You can expand your ninja abilities by earning Ninjanuity tokens, which unlock new abilities and upgrade existing ones in the skill tree. Its not a terribly complex skill tree, but it doesnt need to be. Although the combat is obviously not as advanced as games like Bayonetta or the Batman Arkham series, its very enjoyable. Although sometimes visually distracting, LEGO Ninjago is always a spectacle. My main criticism of LEGO Ninjago is that it feels rather muddled, disjointed and distracted, at almost all times. The plot of the game rushes through that of the movie, often abruptly cutting away to a cutscene from the film before tossing you back into the game. Aerial combat sections, which have you controlling ships and riding dragons, should be insanely cool. Unfortunately theyre not youre thrown into them without any direction and theyre little more than a spectacle. The camera infuriated me several times, getting stuck on scenery when I was trying to explore. Vehicles are strewn throughout levels, which whilst amusing, control absolutely horribly. Theres regularly far too much happening on the screen at once, with battles ending up very visually distracting.
